An aircond gas top-up restores your unit’s refrigerant — R22, R32 or R410A — back to the correct operating pressure. The important part to understand: in a properly sealed system refrigerant is not consumed in normal use. So if the charge is low, that usually points either to a leak or to a charge that was not correct to begin with. The unit needs to be assessed to tell which, because simply topping up a system that is leaking will not hold.
Every gas top-up we do in Kuala Lumpur follows the same six-step scope, residential or commercial. Pressure readings and outlet temperatures recorded on the job sheet and sent on WhatsApp.
We read the outdoor unit’s rating plate to confirm R22, R32, or R410A. Mixing refrigerants damages the system, so we never guess.
Flare joints, copper piping, and the coil are checked for leaks before any gas goes in. Gas doesn’t vanish on its own — we find where it’s escaping.
A manifold gauge is connected to the service port to read the standing pressure, so we know exactly how undercharged the unit is.
Refrigerant is added slowly and metered to the manufacturer’s spec for that exact unit — not “until it feels cold”. No overcharging.
We measure the vent temperature before and after the top-up. A correctly charged 1.5HP split should hit a clear drop you can feel immediately.
Final pressure and both temperature readings are recorded on the job sheet. If a leak was found, the repair quote is attached in the same WhatsApp.
If any one of these applies, the charge should be checked with a gauge — not topped up blindly. Two or more usually means a leak is involved.
The classic symptom. The fan still blows, but the air isn’t cold. With too little refrigerant the coil can’t pull heat out of the room.
A low charge drops the coil temperature below freezing and moisture frosts over. If you see ice on the pipes outside, stop the unit and call us.
The room takes far longer to cool, or never reaches the set temperature even on a normal KL afternoon. The system is starved of gas.
An undercharged unit runs almost non-stop trying to hit the thermostat. You’ll notice the compressor outside rarely cycles off.
Running constantly for weaker cooling burns more power. A KL household running two undercharged 1.5HP units can see the bill creep up month on month.
A faint hiss can be refrigerant escaping through a leak point. It’s a clear sign you need a leak test, not just a top-up.

Refrigerant doesn’t get used up like fuel — it runs in a sealed loop. If the charge is low, gas has escaped through a leak, usually at a flare joint, the copper piping, or a corroded coil. That’s why we always run a leak test before topping up R22, R32, or R410A back to OEM pressure. A top-up gets cooling back fast, but if there’s a major leak it won’t hold, so we quote the leak repair at the same time. No “gas refill” gimmicks.
About 30 to 60 minutes per unit. That covers the leak test, connecting a manifold gauge to the service port, charging the refrigerant to the manufacturer’s pressure, and checking the outlet temperature before and after. Final pressure is logged on the job sheet so you have a record.
The most common signs are warm or lukewarm air from the unit, ice forming on the copper piping or the indoor coil, slow or weak cooling, longer run times, a higher electricity bill, and sometimes a hissing sound near the unit. Any one of these means the charge should be checked with a gauge — not topped up blindly.
